\t\tAfter Burner<\/strong> is a rail shooter arcade game developed and released by Sega in 1987. Players control an American F-14 Tomcat fighter jet and must navigate through 18 unique stages, eliminating waves of enemies. Armed with a machine gun and a limited supply of heat-seeking missiles, the game delivers high-intensity action. It features a third-person perspective, similar to Sega\u2019s earlier hits Space Harrier<\/em> (1985) and Out Run<\/em> (1986), and runs on the Sega X Board arcade system, known for its advanced surface and sprite rotation capabilities.<\/p>\n

The game was one of Sega’s first to feature a hydraulic “taikan” motion simulator arcade cabinet. This elaborate setup replicated an aircraft cockpit with flight stick controls, a seatbelt-equipped chair, and hydraulic technology that moved, tilted, rolled, and rotated the cockpit in sync with the on-screen action.<\/p>\n

Designed by Yu Suzuki and Sega’s AM2 division, After Burner<\/em> was envisioned as Sega\u2019s first “true blockbuster” video game. Development began in December 1986, shortly after Out Run<\/em> was completed, and was kept secret within the company. Inspired by the 1986 films Top Gun<\/em> and Laputa: Castle in the Sky<\/em>, Suzuki initially planned for a fantasy aesthetic similar to Laputa<\/em>. However, he pivoted to a Top Gun<\/em> style to make the game more appealing to global audiences. Development took place outside Sega’s main offices in a building dubbed “Studio 128,” facilitated by the company\u2019s adoption of a flextime work schedule.<\/p>\n
