Asteroids

Asteroids is a classic multidirectional shooter arcade game designed by Lyle Rains and Ed Logg and released by Atari in November 1979. Players control a spaceship navigating an asteroid field, aiming to destroy asteroids and flying saucers while avoiding collisions and enemy fire. The game becomes increasingly challenging as asteroid numbers grow.

Developed using hardware from Atari’s Lunar Lander and inspired by Spacewar!, Computer Space, and Space Invaders, Asteroids features a two-dimensional, wraparound vector display. The game was refined through trial and error, evolving from an unfinished project called Cosmos.

A standout of the golden age of arcade gaming, Asteroids sold over 56,000 arcade cabinets and inspired numerous developers and imitators. Its Atari VCS port alone sold more than three million copies, solidifying its legacy as a groundbreaking and influential title in gaming history.
