Snow-Shoveling Service Available for Seniors

• Public Safety Again Sponsoring Student Help Program

 – Senior citizen residents this winter again are being offered a snow shoveling service sponsored by the Pubic Safety Department in conjunction with students from Nutley High and the Walker Middle School.

Commissioner Alphonse Petracco today asked those senior citizens who wish to avail themselves of the SOS service ("Shovel Out Seniors") to call 973-284-4929 to register.

"I believe this program provides a much needed service to our township's senior citizens and at the same time encourages a positive interaction between youth and residents in our community," Petracco said.

Seniors who sign up must call in after each snowstorm to request the shoveling services. This call helps prevent the students from going homes that already have been shoveled.

Students interested in the program must register with the office of Nutley High School Principal Gregory Catrambone, or with Joseph Capello at the Walker Middle School. Students are required to have a permission slip signed by a parent in order to participate in the program.

Students will work in teams of two or more and will assigned homes in their neighborhoods. No student will be allowed to enter a home and if a situation
makes a student uncomfortable, he or she is to contact the Department of Public Safety immediately.

Students may also choose to volunteer their time for community services as part of CCD or scout badges. The program is based on a first come- first served basis.
