Town Initiating Daily Checks on Confined Seniors
• Elderly Residents Can Expect a Friendly Telephone Call
Jul 23, 2012 – Public Affairs Commissioner Steven Rogers today announced the start of a new program utilizing trained volunteers who will begin placing daily telephone calls to check on the well-being of Nutley senior citizens aged 65 who live alone who have registered for the new "Senior Call Program."
Commissioner Rogers says the program will utilize trained volunteers to place the calls.
"The program is intended for seniors who live alone, or have little or no contact with others on a daily basis," Rogers says. Calls will be made Monday through Saturday throughout the day.
Family, friends, social workers, clergy, and other organizations serving the needs of the elderly can refer participants.
The program is designed to include those senior citizens who may not have friends or family, who may not be able to get out of the house easily, or those who could benefit from knowing that someone in the community cares about their well-being.
"Many seniors who live alone do not interact with anyone for weeks," Nutley's new Public Director has discovered.
"Some seniors have become ill without anyone knowing about it. This program is a friendly way of asking, 'How are you doing?' and then providing any assistance once they once that question is answered.
