New Program Assists Nutley Veterans and Their Families
• Rogers Invites NHS and College Students to Participate
Jul 18, 2012 – Department of Public Affairs Commissioner Steven Rogers announced today that he is including as part of his military and veterans affairs program a component that gives Nutley High School seniors and local college students an opportunity to serve their country and township by volunteering to periodically interact, and to check on the welfare of Nutley residents presently serving in the military and their family members.
"I see a need to keep a check on the welfare and health of many of our veterans," Rogers explained, "because many employers and colleges are looking for resumes that include some type of voluntary community service. Why not ask our young people to fulfill that need and at the same time help them to attain some educational requirements."
Rogers says students who volunteer will be asked to attend a workshop at the Nutley Department of Public Affairs.
"Once they are trained, they will be given a list of local veterans and military families who they can "adopt."
Commissioner Rogers says that the student volunteers will be interacting with veterans and military personnel via phone, the Internet, and in some cases personal visits with staff members. He also added that upon completion of their assignment, students will receive a Certificate of Appreciation and a letter stating that they completed a community service program.
Student volunteers are asked to contact Dan Jacoby at the Public Affairs Dept., 973-284-4976 and ask for Mr. Dan Jacoby
