Obama Squeeks Out Close Win Over Romney in Nutley
• Sen. Menendez, Sheriff Fontoura Do Well Here in Today's Primary
Jun 5, 2012 – Barack Obama edged out a 200-197 victory over Mitt Romney in Nutley's third ward vote tonight. The closeness of that vote within the town ended with an overall town total of 542 votes for President Obama's and 501 for Romney. Voter turnout today was light with only 1,274 ballots cast in Nutley's three wards.
However the race for United States Senator wasn't quite so close as Democrat Robert Menendez in Nutley with 533 votes to Republican Joe Kyrillos's 435.
Rep. Bill Pascrell's district no longer includes Nutley (he presently is leading Steve Rothman 2-1 in nearby Passaic County) but veteran Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen, whose basic Morris County district was extended this year to Nutley, did well. Frelinghuysen, a Republican, finished ahead of Democrat challenger John Arvanites, 476-420.
Popular Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura, a Democrat tonight was sure to win nomination and be returned to office. Fontoura's margin of victory in Nutley however, was 454-409, but close enough again to illustrate Nutley's traditional and continued close battle between Republicans and Democrats.
Overall, there was a total of 1,274 Nutley citizens who cast ballots today.
