Columbia High Edges Out 8-7 Win Over Nutley

May 18, 2012 -- Nutley faces Montclair tomorrow evening for the GNT championship in a game set for Riverside Stadium in Newark. But yesterday, it was Columbia High's chance to say they're the runnerups as the Cougars edged out an 8-7 win over Nutley in regular season play.

There were plenty of hits in yesterday's match: Nutley had 11, Columbia 10. Every single Nutley player had at least one hit and John Llano had three.

Eric Lax pitched five innings and got credit for the win.

Nutley Faces Montclair for GNT Championship 5:30 pm Sunday

May 17, 2012 -- Nutley High's varsity baseball team stunned Seton Hall Prep, the defending champion of the Greater Newark Tournament, by scoring a decisive 9-1 score in a regular league game this past week that unexpectedly places Nutley in the GNT's season championship game scheduled 5:30 p.m. this Sunday at Newark's Riverfront Stadium.

The Raiders might well need another unexpected surprise to win the GNT 2012 championship as Nutley will face the neighboring and powerful Montclair High School for the 2012 title. Nutley and Montclair faced one another in regular season play this spring and the Mounties won both games.

Montclair qualified for the GNT championship by defeating third-seeded Millburn, 4.2.
Seton Hall Prep was seeded first. Nutley wasn't even in contention for the 2012 title until its totally unexpected 9-1 victory over Montclair.

Nutley Baseball in 7-2 Win Over Belleville

May 17, 2012 -- Belleville jumped off to a 2-1 lead in the first inning of Thursday's 7 p.m. baseball meeting with Nutley but the Bellboys never scored again while Nutley picked up seven runs for the final victory.

No other game stats or lineups for Nutley were reported by officials.

Millburn 12, Nutley 2

May 16, 2012 -- Millburn High School captured an easy 12-2 victory over Nutley's varsity baseball team today. Millburn's Anthony DelGreco, Milo Freeman and Will Fitzgerard hit the Nutley pitching for home runs. Overall Millburn's 12 runs came on nine hits.

Nutley scored two runs in the sixth inning. No other game stats or lineups for Nutley were reported by officials.

Nutley 8, Cedar Grove 0

May 11, 2012 -- Two back-to-back tournament victories for Nutley High's baseball including an 8-0 shutout over Cedar Grove on the Park Oval yesterday (Thursday) advanced the Raiders to this Saturday's Greater Newark Tournament's semifinals in Verona where Nutley will face the league-leading Seton Hall Prep.

Nutley pitcher Joe Feraco held Cedar Grove to two hits yesterday while his teammates exploded in the second inning with four runs and then went on to score another four in two innings later.

The first Nutley rally opened with a single in the second inning by Austin Kunz followed by a a triple to center off the bat of Nico Mercandante. Jack Kraft's single then scored Mercandante and the inning ended with Nick Garioano's homerun blast into deep center field.

The Nutley victory ended Cedar Grove's seven-game winning streak.

>The Raiders wouldn't be in the semi-finals were it not for the hard-fought 6-4 victory at West Essex this past Monday. West Essex was leading 4-3 before Nutley rallied with three runs in the final inning to capture the victory. Condito had three hits in the game including two doubles. Nick Gariano also doubled and scored two of Nutley's runs.

Roco Puzzo and Skylar Petretta shared the pitching duties in the Nutley victory over West Essex.
