 – Walker School Principal John Calicchio surprised last night's Board of Education meeting by announcing his plans to retire at the close of the current academic year. Although he made known his retirement plans a week ago to top administrators, his plans came as a surprise to many at last night's meeting.

As the announcement of his retirement was announced revealed last night, he was applauded with a standing ovation in the music room of the John H. Walker School where he has been the principal for the past 12 years.

Caliccho began his teaching career at Newark's Barringer High School in 1974 and joined the Nutley district as a teacher at the Yantacaw elementary school where he was promoted to principal in 1996.

John Calicchio was promoted to the position of principal of the John H Walker Middle School in September 2000.

He also has been active in several community events and organizations that led to his high recognition and popularity in town. He has been active with the Nutley UNICO chapter, the township's Recreation Golf Tournament, the Third Half Club and the Mayor's Tree Lighting Committee, among others.

A graduate of Florida's St. Leo College, Calicchio holds a master's degree in administration and supervision from Jersey City State College and has served as president of the Nutley Administrators Association.

"John Collicchio is one of the finest educators and administrators I have ever known," Board of Education Trustee Steven Rogers said last night. "I have traveled around the nation visiting many schools and have yet to find a more dedicated, passionate, man as him. He will be missed and I wish him God's blessings in the years to come," Rogers said.
