Mar 3, 2012 - Nutley High's Robert Trombetta met his match tonight in Atlantic City during the semi-final round of the NJSIAA State Championships. Trombetta, a junior who undoubtedly will be ranked as the state's top contender a year from now, lost in the semi-final to Troy Heilmann of South Plainfield.

Heilmann took an two-point early lead in the match but from that point forward the match was an even contest. Trombetta fought to make a decisive move in the final 50 seconds of the but was countered by Heilmann who was his equal in strength.

Trombetta reached the semi-final round with three preliminary round victories. He surprised Raritan High School's Anthony Scarcella with a quick 1:39 pin Friday night and then went on to defeat Ridgewood's Joseph Olivia on Saturday morning.

Also competing in the state championships in Atlantic City was Nutley freshman Vinnie Mainiero at 170 pounds and senior Nick Gaeta at 195 pounds.

Mainiero, accompanied by a contingent of family and schoolmates, powered over Christopher Miche of J.P. Stevens after pinning Allentown's Alec Rugo in 49 seconds in the pre-quartrers. Mainiero was eliminated in his third round by Ethan Ramos of Hawthrne.

Three other members of the strong Nutley wrestling team were also in Atlantio City but lost in the prelimary round. They were Brandon Keena (160 lbs.), Andree Hamlin (185 lbs.) and Carlos Rosa (220). Keena lost 10-7 to Linden HIgh School's Travis Foster. Hamlin lost in overtime to Donovan Morris of Lawrence High Scjpp; while Ramos was soundly beaten 13-0 by Colton Bigelow of Ocean Township.

Nutley High Heads to Atlantic City for State Championships

Mar 2, 2012 -Nutley High School's Robert Trombetta, a junior and a member of the varsity wrestling team with a personal record of 35 wins against only 2 losses, this weekend is in contention for the New Jersey State championship in Atlantic City.

Trombetta still has to win preliminary matches today and tomorrow before the finals Saturday night. But he has already met and beaten Mike Magaldon of Watchung Hills, the apparent leader in the 120-pound weight class. Trombetta pinned Hellman earlier this month (Feb. 8) in 2:17.

The Nutley wrestlers in Atlantic City this weekend are led by head coach Frank DiPiano and accompanied by several parents and students.

Nutley Wins District Championship

Feb. 19, 2012 - Nutley's Robert Trembetta, the favorite in this weekend's NJSIAA wrestling tournament, was not alone among his Nutley teammates, in capturing victories this weekend in the District 14 finals. Trembetta, along with five other Nutley wrestlers, won the district crown. All six now head to Atlantic City for the final state championships round.

The huge victory, the first team championship in 33 years for Nutley High School, resulted in Frank DiPiano's being named "coach of the year," a district title he has won three times in the past three years. Nutley coach Anthony Montes also was honored as "assistant coach of the year."

In addition to the six Nutley wrestlers who finished first this weekend, two addition Nutley team members won the gold championships, Carlos Rosa on a pin over Livinston's Abel Amare in 3:22 in the 220 lb. division, and Andre Hamlin's victory over Livinston's Joe Fede, 4-0.

The overall team scores: Nutley 237.5 points; Livingston 171.5; Bloomfield 163; Belleville 160; Montclair 87; Newark Academy 54; Montclair Kimberly 18, Newark East Side 15, and Newark West Side 13.

    Feb. 4, 2012 - Nutley (25) at Emerson High (31) on February 4

    Now that Nutley High's wrestling team has won the Essex County Championship, the next challenging level would be to win the state NJSIAA sectional championship that gets underway this week. As a step in that direction, Nutley head coach Frank DiPiano accepted the invitation for a match with week with Emerson High school, top seed in the Bergen County championship.

    The matches were held Saturday and Emerson won the match 31-25. The Nutley victories included Julian Figueroa at 113 pounds followed by Robert Trombetta's 3:08 pin over Scott Galdi at 120 pounds.

    Jordan Nichimson at 182 pounds won in an overtime match on a 4-2 decision over Joey Fisco, 4-2,and in the final match Nutley's Nick Gaeta pinned Emerson's Joe Mallette in 2:29, and in an overtime 195-lb match, Nick Gaeta pinned Joe Mallette in 2:29.

    Feb. 8, 2012 - Nutley (25) at Emerson High (31) on February 4

    An interin warmup meet? The district champs obsously weren't at full strength when the team suffered a 41-17 defeat at the semifinal round hosted at South Plainfield on Feb. 8. Winners had wrestled much more often than Nutley this season with only two losses in 33 games. Nutley's record by comparison was 18-4.

    Winning their matches for Nutley were Anthony DeLorenzo over Ryan Walsh (SP), 3-1; Brendon Keena on a 5-3 decision over Inan Sikel, Vinnie Mainiero on a 2-1 decision over Alex Lundy and Nick Gaeta at 195 pounds over South Plainfield's Sam Bermudez on a 7-0 decision.

    Nutley lost the two upper weights; Tory Russell of South Plainfiend decisioned Carlos Rosa, 4-3, at 220 pounds, and Nutley Andrew Halin lost ona a 3-2 decision to Tyler Calderone.

    Jan. 28,2012- Nutley Wins Essex County Wrestling Championship - First Time Ever!

    For the first time in the history of Nutley High School, the wrestling team captured the Essex County championship. The victory for coach Frank DiPiano and his team Saturday (1/28/2012) was more than decisive: Nutley's overall point score was 203 compared to second place West Orange (169) and Seton Hall Prep, third, with 153.5.

    Nutley head coach Frank DiPiano said the victory was especially significant because the total point score came as a result of victories scored at all weight categories. In the final round, Nutley won with six wrestlers finishing in the top three and 11 others in point-scoring semi-final rounds.

    Nutley junior Robert Trombetta not only finished in first place, but also was the champion in the county championships as a freshman and sophomore. If he continues his series of a first-place victories next year, Trombetta would be among only seven wrestlers who have accomplished that feat in New Jersey's history of high school wrestling
    in New Jersey.

    Nick Gaeta also captured a first place victory at 195 pounds.

    Nutley High's athletic director, Joe Piro, and several other coaches and Nutley staff members played key roles in organizing and overseeing what was an extraordinary efficient undertaking with a full complement of five matches underway simultaneously at the huge Codey Arena in West Orange. County Executive Joseph DiVincennzo Jr. of Nutley was also on hand to assist the complement of school officials and volunteers.

    Jan. 27,2012- Nutley A Favorite in County Wrestling Finals

    Nutley is one of the favorites to capture top honors at this weekend's Essex County wrestling tournament. The action begins tonight with the pre-quarter finals and resumes tomorrow (Saturday) at 10 a.m. with the quarterfinals, then the semi-finals and consolation rounds.

    The championships are schedule to begin at 4 p.m. tomorrow. All the action takes place at the Codey Arena in West Orange.

    Nutley senior Robert Trombetta is a favorite for the county title at 120 pounds. Trombetta finished seventh last year at the state championships and this past Wednesday won a 4-2 decision over Seton Hall's Sam Cali

    "Bobby is one of the most focused individuals I have every coached," Frank DiPiano, Nutley's head coach told Star-Ledger sports analyst Mike Lamberti.

    Tonight's pre-quarter finals get underway at 7.

    The overall strength of Nutley's wrestling team was reinforced Wednesday night when the Raiders defeated Seton Hall Prep 39-28. The victory reinfored Nutley as one of the favorites to win this weekend's county tournament. Wednesday's loss was Seton Hall's 7th in 14 matches this season.

    Nutley begins its tournament competition this weekend with a season record 15 wins against two losses.

    Jan. 24 -- Nutley's top-rated wrestlers lost their second match of the season by two points this past Sunday in tournament action in the NHS gym. The Raiders lost their opening noon match to Don Bosco Prep 36-34 but went on to a lopsided 40-24 win over West Orange in the second round.

    The Raiders phenomenal 14-2 season thus far has attracted the attention of schools state-wide. Last Tuesday's 40-19 victory at Passaic Valley High School was televised by Madison Square Garden/Cablevision sports as Nutley took eight of the night's 13 matches.

    Jan. 16, 2011 -- Nutley High's wrestling team this holiday morning boasts a phenomenal 11-1 record including the number-one Star-Ledger rating in Essex County, During the past week, coach Frank DiPiano's team has faced six different schools including two Jersey Shore communities.

    The next opportunity for Nutley fans to see a home match comes this Friday, Jan. 20, when West Orange challenges the Raiders starting at 5:30 p.m.

    Here's a recap of the Nutley's string of victories including the holiday tournament play:

    Jan. 6, 2011 -- - On January 6, in a regular SEL event, Nutley overpowered Livingston, 43-28, by winning nine of the 13 matches including pins by Anthony DeLorenzo at 106 lbs, David Golembeski at 126 lbs, Jordan Nochimson at 182 lbs. and Nick Gaeta at 195 lbs. Nutley also won four matches on decisions: Ralph DiPasquale at 138 lb., Mike Fazzini at 145 lbs., Brandon Keena at 160 lbs. and Carlos Rosa at 220 lbs.

    The next day, Jan. 7, featured Nutley hosting a tournament with Highland Park, Wall Township, Point Pleasant. Nutley celebrated the day by defeating all three teams.

    Highland Park fell to the Raiders, 49-22, in the early morning round. DeLorenzo, Figueroa and Maniero won on pins while decisions were scored by Trombetta, Mike Fazzini, and Brandon Keenan.

    In the second round, Nutley won five of the 13 matches on decisions, one on a technical fall (Jordan Nochimson over Point Pleasant's Nicholas Dzuna at 182 lbs.); one on a 4-0 "sudden victory (Mainero over Point Pleasant's Ed Kendall), and two on pins, by Ralph DiPasquale over Point Pleasant's Andrew Moslowitz in 1:07, and Nick Gaeta over Leonardo Kolydas (Point Pleasant) in 1:22.

    The day's final round ended with Nutley winning its 11th match of the season with a 41-18 victory over Wall Township. Anthony DeLorenzo (106 lbs) and Julian Figueroa (113 lbs) both won on decisions; Robert Trombetta won by forfeit, and David Golembeski at 126 lbs for Nutley also by decision.

    At 132 lbs, Mike Fazzini scored a 5-0 decision over Wall Township's AJ Romanelli. Wall came back at 145 lbs with Tony Wishart pinning Nutley's Joe Iorio in 1:18.

    Bucgikas Briganti scored on a decision for Nutley at 152 pounds followed by Brandon Keena 's pin in 32 seconds at 160 lbs.

    The final three matches: Nutley's Jordan Nochimson defeated Wall's Austin Ridoux, 15-0 with a technical fall at 3:40; Nick Gaeta pinned Wall's Tyler Hetzel in 1:24 and heavyweight Carlos Rosa of Nutley won by forfeit.

    Nutley took an early 12-0 lead over Bloomfield with the clincher coming in the final three rounds when Anthony DeLorenzo and Robert Trombetta both pinned their opponents and Julia Figueroa won on a decision over Bloomfield's Mike Aktas, 6-0.

    170 lbs -- Bloomfield's Kyle Christensen won on a forfeit.

    182 lbs -- Jordan Nochimson (Nutley) pinned Anthony Mastriani in 36 seconds.

    195 lbs -- Nick Gaeta (Nutley) won on a forfeit.

    220 lbs -- Carlos Rosa (Nutley) pinned Terrence Antoine in 1:29.

    Nutley's next home match comes next Wednesday (1/11) when West Essex visits the NHS gymnasium for competition beginning at 7 p.m.

    Raiders Finish in First Place
        At 9-Team Holiday Tournament

    Dec. 17, 2011 -- Nutley High School sponsored an all-day December Wrestling Tournament that attracted more than 1,000 persons from nine North Jersey communities. The Raiders did well in their home gymnasium edging out Westfield and Roselle Park for the championship honors.

    Final team scores: Nutley 232, Westfield 194.5, Roselle Park 169, Linden 118, Mountain Lakes 110, Passaic Tech 106, Glen Ridge 46, Newark West Side 32 and Shabazz High School, 9.

    Seven Nutley wrestlers made it to the final round that features 14 matches and of those seven, five captured the championship in their weight classes.

    The Nutley championships went to Anthony DeLorenzo at 106 lbs., Robert Trombetta with a pin at 120 lbs.,
    Brandon Keena at 160 lbs, Nick Gaeta at 195 lbs. and Carlos Rosa with a pin at 1:31 at 22 pounds.

    The tournament attracted more than 1,000 persons to the event that began at 9 a.m. and ended after 5 p.m. Dozens of workers including volunteers not only held the gap between matches less than two minutes, but also oversaw a lunch break that served the athletes and their fans in the Nutley High School cafeteria.

    Athletic Director Joseph Piro and Nutley wrestling coach Frank DiPiano and his assistants, Eric Puzio and Frank Sasso were assisted by a large coordinating staff throughout the day.

    The scoring of the final championship round follows:

    106 pounds – Anthony DeLorenzo (Nutley) defeated Joseph Albanese (Passaic Tech) - 7-2.

    113 pounds – John Devito (Roselle Park) defeated Nick Ferrante (Mountain Lakes) – 10-4.

    120 pounds – Robert Trombetta (Nutley) defeated Mike Kalimtzis (Westfield) -- pin 2:52.

    126 pounds – Garrett Gotthelf (Mountain Lakes) defeated Sam Souza (Nutley) – 9-1.

    132 pounds – Brendan Leary (Roselle Park) defeated Moe Abdelaziz (Passaic Tech) – 9-7.

    138 pounds – Nick Rotondo (Westfield) defeated Bobby Vail (Roselle Park) – 7-0.

    145 pounds – Ellis Opoku (Westfield) defeated Max-Daniel Sokollelk (Mountain Lakes) – 3-0.

    152 pounds – Pelal Deeb (Passaic Tech) defeated Colin Barber (Westfield) – 3-1.

    160 pounds – Brandon Keena (Nutley) defeated AJ Nelson (Mountain Lakes) – 3-1.

    170 pounds – Samuel Jackson (Newark West Side) vs. Travis Foster (Linden) – Disqualification.

    182 pounds – Vic Pozsonyl (Roselle Park) defeated Jordan Nochimson (Nutley) – pin 1:05.

    195 pounds -- Nick Gaeta (Nutley) defeated Nick Knepper (Westfield) – pin 3:23.

    220 pounds – Carlos Rosa (Nutley) defeated Vincent Picarelli (Roselle Park) – pin 1:31.

    285 pounds – Sumir Burns (Linden) defeated Kyle Kania (Westfield) – pin 1:58.
