Nutley hopes to stay in the winning column tonight after suffering four consecutive loses before topping Glen Ridge, 53-22, on Tuesday. Tonight's action - a game rescheduled from Nutley to Belleville High School at the last minute yesterday - is scheduled for 8 p.m.

The action scheduled tonight at Belleville High is part of a special benefit at the high school that Nutley players are supporting as good neighbors, albeit committed rivals in sports.

The varsity girls' teams from the two schools will will complete in a 6 p.m. match today and the boys' varsities from the two schools are scheduled for an 8 o'clock match.

During the past week, Nutley was able to break a four-game loosing streak when on Tuesday with a decisive 53-32 win over neighboring Glen Ridge. Scoring for the Raiders was led by Nick Garino 13, Jonathan Russo 12 and Joe Feraco, 11. Other Nutley scores: Ryan Fischer 7, Josh Thomson 5, Andrew Flynn 3 and Charlie Bingham 2.

Devin Garrity was high scoring for Glen Ridge with 10 points.

Nutley was outplayed ad suffered a 57-36 defeat on Saturday, Feb. 11 in a home game with Fair Lawn High School. As sometimes happens after a lopsided loss, only the scores by periods were reported and that were: Fairlawn 13-15-14-15 for a 57 total. Nutley: 11-7-12-6 for a 26 point total.


Arts High 52, Nutley 43

small>Feb. 9, 2012 -- Arts High School jumped to a 19-4 lead by the end of the opening quarter and ending with a 52-43 victory over Nutley at the Newark school on Thursday, Feb. 9.

High scoring for Arts was Jerrel Prult's 19 points; Chidozie Akwuaku with 15 and Antoine Bell with 12.

Nick Gariano and Scott Gonzalez each had 9 points for Nutley wile teammates Jonathan Russo and Christian Schroeder each contributed 8 points, Joe Feraco 5 and Josh Thompson 4.


Golda Och 53, Nutley 44

Feb. 8, 2012 -- Nutley led at the end of the first half and trailed Golda Och by a
single point at the half this afternoon. But from there on in the second half, Nutley was outplayed and ended up dropping their 12th game of the season, 53-44. When the two teams played one another last, back on Dec. 17, it was Nutley's ballgame all the way, 66-41.

Christian Schroeder with 16 points and Jonathon Russo with 12 were high scoring for Nutley yesterday. Other scoring: Joe Feraco 7, Nick Gariano 6, John Llano 2 and Scott Gonzalez 1.

Sam Marlowe led the Golda Och team with 17 points and John Drill and Benjamin Susskine each added 14.

Yesterday's game was the first of three-in-a-row for Nutley. The Raiders are back in action tomorrow (Thursday afternoon with a 4 p.m. game at Arts High School and on Friday, Fairlawn will visit the NHS gymnasium for contest at 7 p.m.


Nutley 41, Montclair Immaculate 36

Feb. 2, 2012 -- Nutley's varsity basketball team has a rough schedule ahead this week that wasn't helped by the team's 5-41 loss to Verona Thursday night. The Raiders had beaten Verna earlier in the season which made the loss an every greater disappointment.

But now attention turns to the upcoming week. Nutley travels to Golden Och for a 4:30 pm. game Wednesday and on Thursday, the Raiders will face Arts High at 4 p.m. Nutley's next home game will come 7 p.m. Friday against Fairlawn.

Although Verona got off to a fast start Thursday and was leading 39-26 midway through the final period, Nutley exploded outscoring Verona 13-4 to trail in the game by only 4 points.

Nutley senior John Schroeder a minute later swished two foul shots to hold Verona's lead to four points but then in the final two minutes of the contest, Verona regained its composure with five consecutive points for the final 50-41 victory.


Nutley 41, Montclair Immaculate 36

Jan. 24, 2012 -- Jonathan Russo was high scoring with 12 points leading the Nutley varsity baskeball team to a 41-36 victory Tuesday over Montclair Immaculate Conception. Nutley pulled ahead in the first quarter and was never headed.

Montclair's offense was led by David Williamson with 19 points, more than the rest of his team combined.

Other Nutley scoring: John Llanoz, 7 points; John Thomson, Christian Schroeder and Nick Garlano, each with 4 points, Charlie Bingham and Scott Gonzales,3; points, and Joe Feraco and Ryan Fischer 2 points.


Belleville 49, Nutley 35

Jan. 17, 2012 -- Nutley held a 22-17 lead at the half but Belleville overpowered the Raiders in the second half for a 49-35 victory. Tommy Rosario was high scoring for Belleville with 18 points. Nick Gariano's 11 points were high for Nutley.

Other scoring for Nutley: Jonathan Russo 8, Joe Feraco 6, Scott Gonzalez and Josh Thomson each with 3 and Ryan Fisher and Christian Schroeder each with 2.

Belleville's Julian Rodriguez was also in the double digits for Belleville. The rest of the Belleville scores: Keith Everett 7, Nick Martinez 6, Dominque Issac 5, Shaq Richards 2 and one point for Kevin Cabello.

Kearny 47 Nutley 42

Jan. 14, 2012 -- After trailing Kearny for nearly four complete periods, the Raiders rallied to come within a single point of winning in the final seconds of Saturday afternoon's basketball match in the Nutley gymnasium.

Joe Feraco, a junior, and senior Jonathon Russo scored 16 and 10 points respectively, the only Raiders to hit the double figures. Nonetheless, after Kearny's holding onto the led an in full control fors the first three periods Saturday, Nutley sparked in the final stanza to trail the Cardinals by a single point with a little more than a minute to play.

Kearny's big guns, Dylan Hoch with 20 points and Evan Piwawarski with 14 finally rallied their low-scoring teammates for a few extra points to capture the final 47-42 victory.

Nutley's scoring, with the only Feraco and Russo in the double figures, reflected a weakness. Nutley ended the day with an even 6-6 season record. Those single-figure scores for the Raiders Saturday came via seniorS John Llano with 5 and Christian Schroeder with 3. Seniors John Thompson and Ryan Fischer added 3 points each while Nick Garino had 2.

Jan. 7, 2012 -- For the second time this week, Nutley's basketball team got off to a fast start only to see the scored tied at the half. But this afternoon, the Raiders rallied in the third and final periods to capture a 42-36 victory over Verona High School.

Scoring in the double-digits for Nutley were yr Joe Feraco and Ryan Fischer with 16 and 10 points respectively. Jonathan Russo added nine points, Christian Schroeder 3, and Scott Gonzalez and Nick Garino each with 2.

Verona's Anthony Huber and Alex Kaslander led the visiting team's scores with 13 and 11 points respectively.

Both teams ended the day Saturday with season total of five wins against three loses.

Nutley 49, Paramus 43

Jan. 5, 2012 -- With the game tied at 38-38, today's Nutley-Paramus basketball match went into overtime and it was there that the Raiders came on strong scoring 11 points to win the match 49-43. Paramus scored five points in the overtime period.

The win leaves Nutley with a winning 4-3 record for the young season. Senior Nick Gariano was high scoring for both teams with 19 points. Other Nutley scores: Joe Feraco 10, Ryan Fischer 8, Jonathan Russo, Scott Gonzalez and Charlie Bingham 2, and John Llano 1.

John Morella was the only Paramus player with a double-digit score with 15 points.

Nutley held a narrow lead for the first three quarters of the game. Paramus energized in the final stanza outscoring Nutley 10-8 to send the game into overtime.

The Raiders return to action next Tuesday (1/10) at 4 p.m. with a home game against Arts High. Nutley then travels to neighboring Glen Ridge for a 4 p.m. game next Thursday.

Newark Academy 43, Nutley 31.

Jan. 3, 2012 -- Nutley returned from the holiday break only to drop a 43-31 decision to a strong Newark Academy team led by Zaire Williams who led both teams by scoring 17 points. The Academy outscored the Raiders in all four quarters of Tuesday's match.

Nutley returns to action tomorrow (Thursday) with a 5:30 p.m. match at Paramus High School.

Zaire Williams scored topped the scoring for Newark Academy with 17 points which teammate Griffin Glatt added nine more.

Johnathan Russo was high scoring for Nutley with 8 points. Other Nutley scoes: Nick Gariano 7, Scott Gonzalez 6, Ryan Fisher and Joe Feraco each with 4 points and Josh Thompson with 2.

Nutley 31, Cedar Grove 25

Dec 23. 2011-- After trailing Cedar Grove in varsity basketball for most of the afternoon yesterday (12/22), Nutley pulled ahead by a single point with 67 seconds left in the match. Cedar Grove fought back but the final minute of play was plagued with by a series of missed foul shots enabling the Raiders to pick up five points for a 31-25 game victory.

Leading the Nutley attack that produced Nutley's third consecutive basketball win this season was senior Nick Garino with 10 points. His teammates weren't far behind in the scoring: Christin Schroeder with 7, John Russo and Scott Gonzalez each with 5, and Ryan Fisher with 4.

The visiting Cedar Grove team almost embarrassed Nutley by compiling a 9-3 advantage in the opening period of yesterday's game. Nutley quickly retaliated by topping Cedar Grove 8-3 in the second period. The two teams consistently were within two points of one another until the final seconds when Cedar Grove stumbled on a couple of foul shots.

Paul Rufo's 13 points for Cedar Grove topped the individual scoring for both teams.

Nutley 47, Montclair Immaculate 32

Dec. 2, 2011 --Seniors John Russo and Nick Garino led Nutley's 47-32 basketball victory over Montclair Immaculate on Tuesday, Dec. 2. Russo scored 11 points and Garino 9. Montclair Immaculate played a strong first half trailing Nutley by only a single point, 18-17.

Other Nutley scoring: Christin Schroeder 8, Ryan Fischer 6, Josh Thomson 4, John Llano 3 and two points each for Charlie Bingham, Nick Feraco and Scott Gonzalez.

Season Opener: Nutley 66, Golda Och 41

Nutley opened the 2011-02 boys varsity basketball season Saturday night(Dec. 17) with a 66-41 victory over Golda Och. Nutley pulled ahead 14-6 in the first period and was never headed.

Christian Schroeder's 15 points were high for both teams. Sam Marlowe had 14 points for Gold Och, the only player on his team to hit the double figures.

Nutley's top players in the season opener included Joe Feraco with 12 points and Ryan Fisher with 11.

Other total scores for Nutley: John Llano and Jonathan Russo, 7 points; Nick Gariano 5, Josh Thompsjon 3, and Charlie Bingham, Andrew Flynn and David Jeung with 2 points each.

Nutley hosts Cedar Grove next in a 4 p.m. match at the NHS gymnasium this Thursday.
