Feb. 29, 2012 -- Were it not for leap year, Wednesday would not have existed and perhaps the girls' basketball loss to Cranford might never had happened. But the reality is Nutley lost a 51-36 match in the quarter-final round of the NJSIAA North Jersey Girls Basketball Tournament.

Cranford was the stronger team right from the start and out-scored Nutley in ever period except the fourth when the Raiders stayed even with school's 15 points. Morgan Miller was high scoring for Cranford with 2 points. Jamie Towey's 12 points topped the Nutley scores.

Other Nutley scores: Tonianne Dematteo 8, Eileen Purcell and Shannon Reid each with 6 points, and Adriana Luzzi and Grace Montgomery, 2 each. Nutley ended the tournament with an overall season record of 20 victories against six losses.

Scotch Plains 55, Nutley 56

Feb. 27, 2012 -- Talk about excitement, fans were screeming as Nutley and Scotch Plains battled to a one point victory for Nutley. The two teams were tied at the half, tied at the close of regulation the final period second the game into overtime at a one-point victory for Nutley.

Taylor Sebolao with 25 points was high scoring for Scotch Plains and the only member of her team to score in the double digits. The Nutley attack was truly a team effort: Eileen Purcell 15, Grace Montgomery 13, Jamie Towey and Tonianne Dematteo each with 11 and Adriana Luzzi, 6.,

Nutley 46, Newark East Side 14

Feb. 23, 2012 -- It was hardly a match, in fact Newark Eastside failed to score a single basket in both the first and third periods today on their own court. High scoring for East Side was Roneisha Roberts with four points.

Tonianne Dematteo 14 points were high for Nutley and sufficient enough to tie Newark's point totals. Grace Montgomery and Jaimie Towey each contributed 9 points for Nutley.

Nutley 73, Westside46

Feb. 21, 2012 -- Tonianne Dematteo racked up an amazing 28 points to lead Nutley High's 73-46 victory over Newark Westside this afternoon. Nutley jumped ahead 19-7 in the first period and was never challenged,

Other Nutley scoring: Jaimie Towey 16, Eileen Purcell 15, Grace Montgomery 8, Adriana Luzzi 3 and Shannon Reid 2.

Deb Askew's 19 points were high for West Side. The game left Nutleywith a record of 20 wins aganst six losses.0

Nutley 51, Bloomfield 46

Feb. 8, 2012 -- Nutley High's girls varsity basketball plays host to Arts High School for a 4 p.m. match tomorrow (Thurs. Yesterday Nutley strengthened it record to 13 wins against four losses with a 51-46 victory over Bloomfield.

Nutley jumped ahead to an 18-0 lead by the end of the first period. Bloomfield countered with 17 points in the second stanza but Nutley was still comfortably ahead, 25-17 at the half.

Nutley's top players took frequent breaks in the second half to give next year's expected starters game experience. Nutley scored 29 second period points to Bloomfield's 26.


Nutley 50, Montclair Kimberly 46

Feb. 2, 2012 -- After trailing throughout the first half, the Nutley girls rallied in the third period scoring 20 points to Montclair Kimberly's 6 to end with a 50-46 victory on Ground Hogs Day.

Senior Jaimie Towey's 12 points were high for Nutley with Tonianne Dematteo and Eileen Purcell each with 11 and Grance Montgomery, 10.

Kimberly's game was led by Gina Guccione with 22 points. She rallied her team to a 15-11 lead after the first period but weakened to 22-20 at the half. Nutley pulled comfortably ahead 40-28 at the end of the third period but Kimberly had a strong 18-10 rally in the fourth.

Other Nutley scoring totals: Adriana Luzzi, Sarah Montes and Jasmine Small, all with 2 points each.

Nutley travels to Bloomfield for a 4 p.m. game tomorrow (Tuesday.)


Nutley 32, Kearny 20

Jan. 28, 2012 -- Thanks to high scoring Jaimie Towey and Tonianne Dematteo, Nutley squeaked out a narrow 32-20 basketball victory Saturday over Kearny High Schjoo. Towey scored 15 points and Dematteo added another 12 to put Nutley's season record to date at 11 wins vs. 3 losses.

Other Nutley scores: Grace Montgomery 4 and Eileen Purcell 1.

Vanessa DaSilva was high scoring for Kearny with 11 points. Other Kearny scoring: Stefanie Gomes 7, Angel Conde 6, and Mandy Jaining and Mercedes Lois each with 3.


Nutley 54, Livingston 25

Jan. 26, 2012 -- Livingston scored only one basket in the opening period this afternoon while the Lady Raiders ended the period with 15 points. And the rest of the game followed a similar pattern with Nutley
never seriously challenged. Final score: Nutley 54, Livingston 25.

Nutley senior Jaimie Towey was high scoring with 18 points followed by classmate Tonianne DeMatteo with 14, Grace Montgomery and Eileen Purcell each with 10, Jasmine Small 2 and Julia Seeremba, 2.

Today's victory was Nutley's 10 of the season against only three loses. Nutley travels to Kearny High School for a 2:30 p.m. game on Saturday.


Nutley 53, Clifton (35) at Nutley)

Jan. 20, 2012 -- Nutley exploded Friday night in the third period outscoring Clifton 53-35 in a contest that ended with a 53-35 Raider victory. Tonianne Dematteo and Jamie Towey were high scoring for the Raiders with 17 and 15 points respectively.

Other Nutley scores: Eileen Purcell 11, Grace Montgomery 8 and Adriana Luzzi, 2.

Nutley led in the opening quarter 9-4 and was never headed.

Kelly Douglass was high scoring for Clifton with 10 points.


West Side (42) at Nutley (51)

Jan. 19, 2012 -- Grace Montgomery with 18 points led Nutley to a 51-42 victory over Newark West Side on Thursday, Jan. 19. The win was Nutley's ninth of trhe season against three losses.

Nutley jumped to a 13-43 lead over West Side in the first period. Tonianne Dematteo also hit the double figures with 10 points. Other scoring totals: Adriana Luzzi 8, Eileen Purcell and Jaimie Towey 5, Julia Seremba 3 and Sara Montes, 2.

High scoring for West Side was Alyshameena Alexander with 15 points.

Nutley (55) at Belleville 23

Jan. 14, 2012 -- It's always a special game when neighboring Nutley and Belleville face one another in high school sports and today was no exception, especially for the Lady Raiders who were overpowering with a 55-23 victory.

Nutley pulled ahead right from the start and ended the first period with an 18-4 advantage. Those wide margins continued right thru the third period before coach Dana Wynne made sure everyone on the Nutley team contributed to the game.

Nutley's big guns again were Tonianne Dematteo, high scoring with 11 points, and Grace Montgomery and Julia Seremba each with 10. Other Nutley individual scores: Julianna Leite 8, Jaimie Towey 6, Eileen Purcell and Shannon Reid each with 4 and Sara Montes, 2.

High scoring for Belleville was Sade Morales with 5 points.

Nutley hosts West Side High School next with a 4 p.m. game this week on Thursday.


Nutley 52 at Newark Arts Academy 48

Jan. 10, 2012 -- Senior Tonianne Dematteo scored a big 20 points at Arts High School today and classmate Jaimie Towey wasn't far behind with 15 points in Nutley's win by a final 51-42 score. Nutley took an early lead and was never headed although Arts held even in the second period when both teams scored 8 points.

The Nutley game totals also included 7 points for Eileen Purcell, 6 for Grace Montgomery and 3 for Adriana Luzzi.

High scoing for Arts High were Aanise Barnes' 16 points and Sydonia Daniels with 13.


Nutley 52
     Newark Academy 48

Jan. 5, 2012 -- Nutley seniors Eileen Purcell and Tonianne Dematteo each scored 15 points to lead Nutley's 52-48 basketball win over Newark Academy in Livingston this afternoon.

Adding to the victory's excitement was senior Eileen Purcell's first-ever "triple-double" as a result of her scoring in the double didgets in three separate categories. In addition to her 15 points, she captured 12 rebounds and was credited with 10 assists.

Nutley senior Jaimie Towey also hit the double digets with 12 points. Other scores today came from Grace Montgomery's 8 points and 2 from Shannon Reid.

Carly Gruenberg's 15 points were high for Newark Academy.

Today's game was played in Livingston.

Nutley's next challenge comes at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Arts High School.

Nutley 45
   Orange 33

Jan. 3, 2012 -- Nutley scored 10 points in the first period and was never headed yesterday in the Raiders
45-33 girls' basketball victory over Orange High School. Nutley Senior Eileen Purcell's 14 points were high for both teams.

Orange never challenged Nutley enabling head coach Dana Wynne to freely rotate among her teams seven top performers. Beside Purcell, scores for Nutley were contributed by senior Jaimie Towey with 9, senior Tonianne DeMatteo 8, senior Shannon Reid 5, sophomore Grace Montgomery 4, junior Sarah Montes 3 and sophomore Julia Seremba, 2.

Sophomore Esther Adams with 13 points paced the Orange team.

Nutley's defense was led by Purcell who grabbed eight rebounds with six assists. Also recovering rebounds were Montes 7, Towey 6, Reid 5, Tonianne DeNatteo 4 and Seremba 3.

The Nutley girls return to action at Thursday with a 4 p.m. game at Newark Acadamy.

Nutley 55
   Old Bridge 46

Dec. 29, 2011 -- The Nutley girls varsity basketball team captured a 55-44 victory in a season tournament last night in the Cancer Benefit Tournament hosted in Cranford. Four Nutley players scored in double digits as the Raiders triumphed 55-46 over Old Bridge High School.

Senior Eileen Purcell was high scoring for Nutley with 17 points followed by senior Jaimie Towey with 13, sophomore Julia Seremba with 11 and senior Tonianne Dematteo, 10.

Nutley led by a single point at the end of the opening period and Old Bridge pulled ahead for a 23-20 halftime lead. Nutley really won the game in the third period when the Raiders exploded with 19 points while holding Old Bridge to 7. Each team scored 16 points in the final stanza leaving the Raiders with the 55-46 victory.

Other individual scoring: 2 points each for junior Juliana Leite and senior Shannon Reid.

Nutley returns to action next Tuesday, Jan. 3, when Orange High visits the NHS gymnasium at 4 p.m.

Cranford High 50
   Nutley Girls 28

Dec. 27, 2011 -- Cranford hosted today's holiday basketball tournament for girls and topped Nutley, 50-28, in the opening round of competition. Cranford's Morgan Miller's 20 points were high for both teams.

High scoring for Nutley was Jaimie Towey's eight points. Other Nutley scores: Jasmine Small and Grace Montgomery each with 6 points, Julia Seremba 4, Tonianne Dematteo 3 and Sara Montes 1.

Nutley Girls 26,
   at Livingston 32

Dec. 22, 2011 -- Nutley led at halftime 15-12 but Livingston outscored the girls in the second half for a 32-26 victory. Jaimie Towey and Jasmine Small led the scoring for Nutley with 7 points each. Sam Rothenberger's 12 points were high for Livingston.

Other Nutley scoring: Julia Seremba 6, Shannon Reid 5, Grace Montgomery 2 and Sara Montes 1.

Montclair 68,
    Nutley Girls 32

Dec. 17, 2011 -- Montclair High made a bold statement this afternoon about who's going to be boss of the girls' basketball season this year. Montclair's 68-32 win today certainly was a sign that Nutley's got to do better and other teams in the Suburban Essex County had better be on alert.

Montclair pulled ahead 17-9 in the opening period this afternoon and was never challenged.

Krya Hines-Allen led Montclair's scoring with 17 points; Mmyisha Hines-Allen had 15 while Deja Davis scored 12.

Nutley's scoring leaders, Jaimie Towey and Tonianne Dematteo each had nine points.

The rest of Nutley's points came from Sarah Montes and Shannon Reid each with 4, Andriana Luzzi and Jasmine Small with 2 each, and Grace Montgomery and Julia Seremba, 1 point each.

Nutley Opens Season

With Win Over Verona

Dec. 16, 2011 -- Nutley High's season opener in girls basketball tonight night almost seemed too easy for the Raiders as senior Jaimie Towney and sophomore Grace Montgomery set a dominating pace with 16 points each. Final score last night was Nutley 60, Verona 43.

Nutley has only a few hours to charge its batteries before traveling to Montclair High for a 3 o'clock game Saturday afternoon.
Last night's Verona game saw Nutley jump score the first basket at the team was never to be headed with a 13-7 lead at the end of the first period.

Nutley coach Dana Wynne also saw a strong performance by senior Eileen Purcell who contributed 13 points along with seven assists and five rebounds.
