Town Tonight Will Buy Out 3 Donna Court Homes

•  Scarpelli Will Apply $2.5 Million Grant to Flood Control Project

 – Nutley's Board of Commissioners tonight is scheduled to approve a $2,284,875 flood control project designed to end the frequent flooding of homes adjacent to the Third River on Donna Court.

During heavy rains on Donna Court, the adjacent Third River takes a sharp turn sending water into homes, especially those on the eastern end of the street.

Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo, who resides on the drier side of the street, has witnessed the flooding of his neighbors for several years and has been instrumental in working with Public Works Commissioner Dr. Joseph Scarpelli in applying and receiving a $2.5 million FEMA grant. Another $100,000 from the Water Resource Development Act was received last year to assist with the project.

Commissioner Scarpelli formally applied for the grants in 2009 shortly after his election to the board. The flood that fall all but totally destroyed the interior furnishings of the homes along the river.

The grant specifically states that the funds can be used to demolish the three most frequently flooded homes located at 43, 47 and 49 Donna Court.
