Jul 9, 2010 – Public Works Commissioner Dr. Joseph Scarpelli announced today (7/9) that "Swing Night" will be postponed until next year. The popular street fair featuring several bands and orchestras, outdoor dining and entertainment, will be missed this year but hopefully will return in 2011, Scarpelli said.
"In light of the current economic climate, along with format changes proposed by police, it has become overwhelmingly evident that we are not going to raise the revenue needed to offset our expenses," said Commissioner Scarpelli.
"Regrettably, we will be postponing the event to next year. Hopefully this will give us more time to increase our fund-raising and strategize on the layout to satisfy everyone."
This year would have marked the 10th anniversary of Swing Night. Initiated by then Mayor Peter Scarpelli, the first Swing Night featured a 30-piece swing orchestra. Over the past several years the "Fabulous Infernos" have become the featured band gracing the main stage. Held in late August, the evening has become a tradition for Nutley residents to enjoy the food of the local eateries, listen to great music, and catch up with friends and neighbors after the long summer.
"I am confident that we can resolve the current fiscal and ancillary issues and return next year with an improved event," Scarpelli said.
