Alan Welland Patrick Roche finished first and second, respectively, in the 2010 Chamber of Commerce 5K Race.
May 2, 2010 – Alan Wells, 47, came all the way from Orlando to win the 2010 5K Run this morning sponsored by the Nutley Chamber of Commerce. But instead of accepting congratulations for himself, Wells' post-race comments were praising the young man who finished right behind him, Nutley High School senior Patrick Roche.
"He ran an outstanding race," Wells said, still a bit out of breath after the race." He was perfect in running."
Roche is quite a standout himself, both when running or competing on the high school track team. Roche is also celebrating his acceptance at Princeton University and at the top of his graduating class this year at Nutley High. He hopes to compete against other Ivy League schools as a member of the Princeton Running Club next year.
The statistics from the races this morning are being tabulated and later today will be available at compuscore.com. NJHometown will add some of the top times and scores with our next update to this srticle.
Additional photos will also be added.
Mayor Joanne Cocchiola ran the distance again this year.
Vince LoCurcio, president of the sponsoring Chamber of Comerce, said this year's race attracted a record number of participants. The registration was a 290 runners when counted 20 minutes before the start.
The Chamber's executive secretary, Rich Spector, led the setup crew which was on the oval at 6 a.m. The volunteers also were up late last night stuffing gift bags which were given to each of today's participants.
