Look close! After a collision on the track, freshman Adam Steck realized he had lost his shoe but continued the race. One lap and a bloody foot later, the Nutley team had medaled and advanced to the Group III championship.

 – Nutley High has eight athletes competing in the Group III N.J. Track Championships tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday. The Raiders competed in the first of three championship rounds this past weekend at Frank Jost Field in South Plainfield.

Advancing into the championship round are senior Lindsay Ryder who finished fourth in the girls' javelin, tossing the javelin 108'4". This makes her a three-year sectional medalist. Sophomore Joe Drago, in his inaugural season, advanced in the 400m run with a time of 51.70.

The following day senior Larissa Lohman broke the Nutley High School record in the girls' pole vault, finishing fourth with a leap of 9'6". Fellow senior Pat Roche advanced in the 3200m run, covering the metric two mile in 10:00.95. Sophomore Greg Palma advanced in the boys' discus with a toss of 123'0".

The boys' 4 x 400 meter relay provided the excitement for the day. The team entered the race seeded to score. Jordan Jimenez, Shvet Patel, and Joe Drago, the first three legs, had the team in medal contention after their legs. As Drago attempted to hand-off the baton to freshman Adam Steck, a collision ensued with a Morristown runner, knocking Drago to the track and the Morristown runner into Steck. Steck lost his shoe in the crash, but ran the anchor leg with only one shoe and sock. One lap and a bloody foot later, the team had medaled and advanced to the Group III championship.

Tomorrow and Saturday's Group III Championship will be held in South Plainfield.
