• New This Year: Bicycle Riders Invited to Participate in March
May 15, 2010 – Mayor Joanne Cocchiola today announced plans for the town's annual Memorial Day Parade scheduled to setpoff at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 31. The parade's opening ceremony will be staged in the Nutley Park Oval with the parade route the same as previous years – Chestnut Street to Passaic Avenue to Centre Street to Franklin Avenue, with reviewing stage in front of John H. Walker Middle School.
Guest speaker this year will be Lieutenant Colonel John Langston of the New Jersey Division of Military and Veterans Affairs.
"I always look forward to the Memorial Day Parade" Mayor Cocchiola said. "It's such an important time for our community as so many have served and are serving in the Armed Forces."
The Mayor once again is inviting family members to march in the parade and is currently collecting names of those in our community who are currently serving in the Armed Forces. Names will be added to the banner which is hung on the Nutley Park Oval fence adjacent to the Town Hall.
New to the parade this year will be a Patriotic Bicycle Parade. Residents young and old are encouraged to decorate their bikes in patriotic fanfare and ride in the parade line-up. Riders 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult and all riders under the age of 14 must wear protective head gear.
Sign-ups for the Bicycle Parade will start at 10 a.m. in front of Town Hall on Monday May 31. The Bicycle Parade will not take place in inclement weather. Other groups are invited to call the Mayor's Office at 973-284-4972 if individuals or a new organization is interested in participating in the parade.
