Busy moments at the early-morning registration desk. All walkers received souvenir yellow t-shirts.

 – Despite a morning downpour, walkers in yesterday's (Sunday) 10th annual Walker-Thon managed to at least complete a portion of their tour through Nutley's parks. But there's no avoiding the fact that the 10th anniversary of the charity event was cut a bit short in 2010.

For members of the John H. Walker family, a visit to the middle school provided not only a dry spot from the rain, but was the first opportunity for relatives to view the portrait placed at the auditorium entrance at the John H. Walker Middle School.

Accompanying Mr. Walker's wife, Gloria, and daughter, Kim, yesterday were Board of Education President Ken Reilly and Superintendent Joseph Zarra.

Walter Smith, coordinator of the Walker-Thon, said family members traveled from North Carolina, Virginia and other distant place to participate in Saturday's event.

The Walker-Thon was launched 10 years ago and raises monies to fund three $1,000 scholarships for graduating seniors at Nutley High School. Savings bonds also are awarded to eighth grade pupils at the Walker Middle School during June's graduation ceremonies.

John H. Walker has been described by many as a man who exhibited exemplary qualifies of citizenship, leadership, compassion, teamwork and respect. As an effort to promote and encourage students to strive for these same ideals, the awards for elementary and middle school pupils have been established.
