10th Annual Walker-Thon Next Saturday

•  Memorial Event Raises Scholarships for HS Seniors

 – The Annual Nutley Walker-Thon -- an event launched 10 years ago in memory of John H.Walker -- is scheduled for this coming Saturday moring. The walk through Nutley's parks raises monies to fund three $1,000 schoarships for graduating hig school seniors.

Additionally, the John H. Walker Memorial Foundation also has established savings bond awards for eighth grade pupils being graduated in the June at the John H,. Walker Middle School.

"Each of the recipients will receive a savings bond and a Walker Foundation pin and certificate," event organizers said today.

The "Walker‑Thon" begins 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Yantacaw School and will continue through the parks of Nutley and winds around and to finish back at the Yantacaw School. The walk will be held rain or shine.

Registration fee is $15 for adults and $10 for students. All who register will receive a shirt. This year youth size T-shirts also will be available.

"Friends of Mr. Walker also are invited to participate whether your register or not,"" says Walter Smith, Foundation president. "We hope to see everyone enjoying a nice stroll through the parks on Saturday.

"Mr. Walker has been described by many as a man who exhibited exemplary qualities of citizenship, leadership, compassion, teamwork and respect. As an effort to promote and encourage students to strive for these same ideals, the awards for elementary and middle school pupils have been established.
