Reilly's Goal: Achieve Greatness in Academics
• Jim Kuchta Elected Vice President at Organizational Meeting Toninght
Apr 28, 2010 – Kenneth Reilly, elected unanimously tonight as president of the Nutley Board of Education, vowed to lead the board "in a new direction with a single focus on academics and technologies." Reilly said he would not "settle for meritocracy and will insist of academic excellence."
Jim Kuchta was elected vice president, also by a unanimous vote, during the opening ceremonies attended by about 70 persons at the Walker Middle School.
Reilly's first charge was to ask Superintendent Joseph Zarra to deliver within 30 days an academic plan designed to achieve greatness in academics throughout the school system.
"This board will ensure that Superintendent Zarra has the support to accomplish those goals," Reilly said.
Reilly also assigned board members to specific committees designed to strengthen such areas as food service, child obesity programs, exploration of solar energy and improving relations with the township's Board of Commissioners.
"Finally, our district faces unique challenges," Reilly said. "Most important is our need to create a climate of trust and confidence through our actions." Then turning toward the audience, Reilly asked the community "for your trust and your support so we can make a difference to your children and to the community."
