"Rescue Me" Emergency Rescue Squad Fundraiser April 11
• Donations Are Down and Expenses Are Up for Volunteers
Mar 16, 2010 – Friends of the Nutley Volunteer Emergency & Rescue Squad has scheduled its first fundraiser, "Rescue Me", a wine and food tasting party, on Sunday, April 11. The 2-5 p.m. event will be held at the Parks and Recreation building on Park Avenue. Featured will be wine tasting from regional wines of the world (courtesy of Nutley Wine Shop) and food selections from Nutley's finest restaurants. All proceeds will benefit The Nutley Volunteer Emergency & Rescue Squad.
The Nutley Rescue Squad has been in existence since 1953 and has emergency medical treatment personnel on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
"Last year alone the squad answered over 2,500 calls, logged 21,566 on its vehicles and logged 12,807 hours by its volunteers," notes Public Safety Director Alfonse Petracco who is urging support for the April 11 fundraiser,.
Petracco notes that the number of volunteers has been decreasing in the past several years. The squad, as a result has been forced to hire paid personnel to fill the shifts. As a result, operating expenses have increased at a period when community donations are down.
Petracco hopes that Nutley residents will recognize "the inherent value of a township based emergency rescue facility" and will generously support the "Rescue Me" wine and food tasting event or by making a donation.
