Nutley Hoopsters Squeeze Wood-Ridge, 53-52

•  Nick Garino's Winning Basket in Final Second of Game

- Senior Brandon Smorto's 20-point game total led Nutley to a nail-biting 53-52 Saturday (Feb. 20) against Wood-Ridge. With fans screaming and on their feet, Sophomore Nick Garino scored the winning basket in the last second of the game played on the Wood-Ridge court.

Senior Anthony Jeffers also scored in the double digits with 10 points. Other Nutley scoring: Mike Koribanick 9, Nick Gariano 7, Nick Luciano 4,and William Lovejoy 3.

Top players for Wood-Ridge: Nick Romero 21, Vinnie O'Bierne 10, and Mike Gibney, 9.

The victory was Nutley's third aainst 16 losses for the season.



Solomon Schechter Rallies
To Second Half Win Over Nutley

Nutley stayed even with Solomon Schechter in the second half of yesterday's basketball game but the visitors had picked up an 11-point advantage before the break that the Raiders were never able to match.
The final 56-43 score gave Solomon Schechter its 11th win of the season against four losses. Nutley is now 2-14 for the year.

Seniors Mike Koribanick and Brandon Smorto each scored 13 points for the Raiders; the game was played in the NHS gymnasium. Nutley returns to action tomorrow (Thursday when Verona High School visits for a 4 p.m. challenge.

Sophomore Nick Gariano contributed 8 points to the Nutley cause yesterday, Christian Schroeder scored 4, Nick Luciano 3, and Anthony Jeffers, 2.



Montclair Immaculate
Edges Out 65-60 Victory

Feb. 2, 2010 - Montclair's Immaculate High School edged out a 65-60 win over the Nutley varsity basketball team Tuesday afternoon. The win was Montclair's 12th of the season against five loses.

The game was a close one with the scored tied at 55-55 going into the final period. Brandon Smorto's 23 points were tops for both teams. Other top Nutley scores included 13 points by Mike Koribanick, 10 by Matt Smith and 7 by Christian Schroeder.

Nutley's record now stands at two wins against 13 loses. The Raiders host Solomon Schecter Day this Tuesday (Feb. 9) in a 4 p.m. game at the Nutley High gymnasium. Verona High will challenge on Thursday at 4 p.m., also in the local gymnasium.



Mike Koribanick's 25 Points
Tops for both Nutley & Arts High

Jan. 29, 2010 -- Mike Koribanick opened this week's basketball action by scoring 25 points to top everyone on the Nutley or Arts High basketball teams on Tuesday. Nutley won that game, 57-40, but yesterday the Raiders were topped by Cedar Grove, 51-42.
Nutley stayed even with Cedar Grove 10-10 in the second period and was on top 17-15 in the final stanza.

The loss yesterday leaves Nutley with a 2-11 record so far this season. Nutley plays again next Tuesday in a 4 p.m. game at Immaculate Conception.

Tuesday's game this past week was a happier time for the Raiders. The 57-40 victory over Arts High was Nutley's second victory of the season. Besides Koribanick, YR Brandon Smorto was a major player contributing 17 points.

Carlos Caberra's 19 points were best for Arts High.



Solomon Schechter, Newark Central
Score Wins Over Nutley

Jan. 19, 2010 --Nutley began this week by dropping two back-to-back basketball games, to Solomon Schechter 54-37 on Monday, and to powerhouse Newark Central High today (Jan. 19)by a 70-27 margin.

Solomon Schecter of West Orange is undefeated this season and held Nutley to 18 points for the first three periods. With backups playing the final quarter for Orange, Nutley rallied for 19 points.

This afternoon (Tuesday, Jan. 19), Nutley managed 27 points against Newark Central High School where Patrick Cole racked up 18 points. Central ended the game with an 8-4 record in what could well be the state's premier basketball league.

Bergen Tech 46,
Nutley 44

Jan. 15, 2010 -- Nutley led at the end of the first quarter but Bergen Tech gradually caught up until the fourth period. That's when the Raiders suddenly took off like a rocket scoring 12 points and coming so close to a victory. Final score, Bergen 46, Nutley 44.

Senior Brandon Smorto was high scoring for Nutley with 12 points. Brandon was just one point behind David Landzberg who was high for the Bergen County Technical School.

Bergen's record for the season so far is 2 wins against 10 losses. Nutley stands at 1-7-0.

The Raiders are scheduled to play again on Monday at 4 p.m. away at Solomon Schecter Day.



Glen Ridge 43,
Nutley 28

Jan. 13, 2010 --Brandon Smorto's 15 points were high scoring in yesterday's (Jan. 12) home game with Glen Ridge. But when it came to total team points, it was Glen Ridge with 43 that captured the victory. Besides Smorto, contributing to Nutley's 28-point total were Anthony Jeffers with 5, Mark Aquino with 4 while Mike Koribanickand Christian Schroeder each had 2.

Glen Ridge's record stands at 3 wins, six loses.

Final score last night: Glen Ridge 43, Nutley 28.

The Raiders are now 1-6-0 for the season.

Verona 37, Nutley 12

Nutley High School's basketball team will be looking for its second victory of the young season tomorrow (Thursday 1/7) when Immaculate Conception visits the Raider gymnasium for a 4 p.m. challenge. Nutley's only victory so far this season in five starts came on Dec. 22 when senior Mike Korbanik's 12 points led the Maroon in a 49-44 win.

Verona High School outscored Nutley 37-12 the game played Jan. 5 at Verona. High scoring for Verona was Justin Bruso with 16 points.

Coach Robert Harbison again is the head basketball coach who will guide many of these same winter players this spring on the baseball diamond

After tomorrow's game, Nutley's basketball schedule includes a 2 p.m. contest this Saturday at 2 p.m. against Kearny in the NHS gym, and another against Glen Ridge next Tuesday (1/12) at 4 p.m., again in the NHS gym.

William Lovejoy and Christian Schroeder were high scoring for Nutley against Clifton on Dec. 29, 2009 but the Raiders lost the match, 60-40, The game, Nutley's fourth of the season, was played at Clifton High School as part of the Livingston Holiday Classic.

Lovejoy and Schroeder each had 7 points for Nutley. Other Raider scores included 6 for Nick Luciano, 6; Nick Gariano and Mike Koribanick, each with 5; Anthony Jeffers and Josh Thomson, each with 4, and Mark Aquino 2.

Livingston outscored Nutley, 32-20, at Livingston on Dec. 28, 2009. Yr Mark Aquino's six points were high for Nutley while Matt Fung's 9 points were high for Livingston.

The loss was Nutley's second in three starts this season. Livingston ended the game with a 2-1 record

Nutley battled Arts High School to a 49-45 victory, the Maroon's first win of the season. Played in the Nutley gymnasium, the loss was the third for Arts.

Senior Mike Koribanick was high scoring for Nutley with 12 points while ick Luciano and John Perez each contributed nine.

Nutley ended the game with an even 1-1 record.

Montclair Kimberly 65, Nutley 29

Nutley High opened its 2009-2010 basketball season with a disappointing 65-29 loss at Montclair Kimberly Academy on Friday, Dec. 18. Junior Matt Smith led the Nutley team with 8 points.

The game, played at 7 p.m. in Montclair, was the first of the 2009-2010 season for both teams.

John Snow with 7 points, all scored in the opening half, was high man for Montclair Kimberly.
