Nutley's 2010 bowling team ended its season with two of its top performers, Nick Rizzi and Phil Bruno's competing in the state individual championships Feb.17 at the Carolier Lanes in North Brunswwick.
Rizzi placed fourth rolling a 214,248,236 for a 698 series inthe first round and then advancing to the second round with a 257, 194, 213 for a 664 series. Rizzi missed the cutoff by 11 pins and finished in 8th place overall.
"Nick had a very good day. He missed only two spars all afternoon," coach George Ackerman said.
Phil Bruno meanwhile bowled a 148, 181, 175 for a 504 series. Did not make the cut. I'm very proud of Phil and Nick for their accomplishments.
"For Nick, finishing #8 in the State is a huge well deserved honor. Both Nick and Phil amd have been consistent all year and year and are integral parts of our team's success," coach Ackermansaid..
Nutley Captures First Place in Sectional Championships;
Bruno and Rizzi Advance to Individual State Honors
Feb. 13, 2010 - Nutley Nutley High School bowlers yesterday (Feb. 12) captured the Sectional 2, Group 3 championships and moves on to the New Jersey State Finals this Wednesday afternoon at the Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick.
Nutley's two top individual bowers yesterday, Phil Bruno and Nick Rizzi also advanced as individual bowlers in the state-wide competition.
"All the boys did a great job," coach George Ackerman said at day's end. "We bowled three consistent games and covered most of our spares. I was very proud of each and every one of our bowlers," Ackerman said.
Scotch Plains placed second in the Group 3 finals. Nutley was first over in section competition.
Here were the results of yesterday's three individual games for Nutley's five-man team:
Joe Frezza – 200, 168, 225 – series total 593.
Andrew Evans – 220, 230, 147 – series total 597.
Phil Bruno – 194, 227, 243 – series total 664.
Angelo Lambroschino – 240, 159, 218 – series total 617.
Nick Rizzi – 232, 226, 200 – series total 268
Total pins for the three-game championship series: 3,129.
Coach Ackerman said he was concerned early yesterday as Phil Bruno felt felt as the team bus arrived in Linden. "But Phil had had a soda and felt better, at least well enough to roll a great 243 final game.
If Bruno had to drop out, Nutley's No. 6 man, sophomore Tyler Huey was waiting in the wings.
"Tyler has been bowling very well these past two weeks and is more than capable of filling in," Coach Ackerman said.
Nutley Varsity Ends Regular Season With 110-2 Record;
Girls Varsity Team Final Record 88 Wins, 17 Losses
Both Boy's and Girl's Bowling teams finished out their regular season this week on a winning note. The boys varsity was particularly impressive with only one loss all season and ending with a record of 110-2.
The Boy's team again swept a very tough Science Park team on this past Tuesday (Feb. 2) during the last day position round. Science is a very competitive team that brings out the very best in Nutley.
"We need tough competition in order to sharpen our skills," says coach George Ackerman.
"Joe Frezza finished the season as he started rolling a 745 series which featured an opening game of 278. Nutley needed every pin as Science Park's anchor Najee Mayers rolled a 268. This game was filled with many strikes and a great deal of excitement.," Ackerman said.
Nutley came out on top, 1036 to 1000, mainly because the Raiders covered most of their spares.
"Picking up spares has been a weakness throughout the season," Ackerman observes. "We work on this part of our game every practice and it seems to be paying off. We must convert our spares in upcoming Tournaments if we hope to advance."
Girls Finish Season
With 3 Consecutive Wins
The Girl's this week played three days in a row, easily sweeping Montclair, Belleville, and Mt. St. Domenic to raise their final record to 88 and 17. Bloomfield won the league with only two games lost all season, both being to Nutley (Nutley's only losses were to Bloomfield).
The Girl's finished second in the new Super Essex Conference (SEC) league. Kelsey Rafter led the girls again on Wednesday (Feb. 3) with another 200 game and a nice 516 series.
A bright spot has been the play of first -year bowler Andrea Hynes who stepped into the Wednesday's lineup and rolled a nice 464 series highlighted by a 189 game.
"I'm so very proud of the girls, not only for the success of the season, but for the improvement they have shown," Coach Ackerman said..

Recap of Science Park,
Bloomfield, Belleville Matches
The Boy's Bowling Team suffered its first loss of the year to Science Park in game 2 of Thursday's (1/19/10) match. The first game was exciting to watch. Not only did Science Park bowl well, 1081, with four of their five bowlers scoring over 200, but Angelo Lambroschino put on a show by opening up with the first 11 strikes before finally ending up with a 297 game.
Nutley also had 4 of 5 bowlers over 200 for a score of 1166 to win the game. All the bowlers were on an emotional high and struggled in game two to suffer their first defeat. The Raiders rebounded in game 3 to win 2 of 3 plus wood with all 5 Raider bowlers shooting over 600
The Girl's Team needed to sweep Bloomfield in order to vault into first place but could not match Bloomfield's experience. The Girl's lost all three games and remain in second place. A bright spot has been the improved bowling of Andrea Hynes. She has stepped into the varsity lineup and has done a great job and seems to have become Nutley's No. 5 bowler just in time for the upcoming tournaments.
Friday the Boy's Team defeated Belleville. Seeing varsity action for the first time were sophomore Tyler Huey and junior Derrick McMullen. Both boys have been bowling well at the JV level and earned the starts Thursday afternoon in a bowl off. Both boys shook off early jitters and performed admirably. Juniors Joe Frezza and Nick Rizzi led the attack, both posting solid games all afternoon. Joe has come out of a mid season slump just in time for the Sectionals. Nick had a great afternoon with another 700 plus series. The Boy's record is now 89 and 2.

Raiders Finish in 2nd Place
At Athletic Directors Tournament
Jan. 20 -- The Nutley Raider bowling team finished second this past weekend in the 15th Annual Essex County Athletic Directors Assn. Bowling Tournament. Nutley rolled games of 985, 996 and 981 for a series of 2962 for the second place finish.
There was some disappointment over Nutley's not finishing first.
"We have been averaging 1000-plus in our league games yet we couldn't hit the 1000 mark in any of the tournament games," coach George Ackerman said.
Too many single pin spares doomed the Raiders. If each bowler had made one more spare each during the afternoon, the Raiders would have finished first in the tournament for the third consecutive year.
Juniors Joe Frezza (669) and Angelo Lambroschino (657) led the attack followed closely by fellow junior Phil Bruno (616). Nick Rizzi pounded the pocket all afternoon but ended up with many a 10-pin rap. His 522 could have easily been a 622. Nick and Andrew Evans also failed to convert needed spares.
Boys Suffer First Loss of Season;
Bloomfield Blankets Girls Team
Jan. 19 -- Nutley boys suffered their first loss of the year today (Tuesday) in the second game of three matches against Science Park. Also on Tuesday, the Nutley girls suffered a 0-7 loss to Bloomfield.
The first boys game was especially exciting to watch. Not only did Science Park bowl well, 1081, with four of their five bowlers over 200, but Angelo Lambroschino put on a show by opening up with the first 11 strikes before finally ending up with a 297 game.
Nutley also had 4 or 5 bowlers over 200 for a score of 1166 to win the match. All the bowlers were on an emotional high and struggled in game two to suffer their first defeat of the year.
The Raiders rebounded in game 3 to win 20 of 3 plus wood with all five Raider Bowlers shooting over 600.
The boys record now stands at 82 wins against 2 losses.
Meanwhile Tuesday, the Nutley Girls Team needed to sweep Bloomfield in order to vault into first place but Nutley couldn't match Bloomfield's experience. Nutley lost all three games and remains in second place.
Coach Ackerman said a bright spot for Nutley has been the improved bowling of Andrea Hynes.
"Andrea has stepped into the varsity lineup and has done a great job. She seems to have become our No. 5 bowler just in time for the upcoming tournaments," Coach Ackerman said.

WESTFIELD TOURNAMENT: Raiders Place Third
Dec. 12, 2009 - The Raider Bowling Team competed in this year's Westfield Tournament on Saturday December 12th. This is the third year for Nutley having placed 3rd two years ago.
The Westfield Tournament is a good way to judge the overall talent level in the state. Overall scores were somewhat for all the participating teams. Nutley Coach George Ackerman says that "although we had a bad day, missing far too many one pin spares, I think the team realizes that they are as good as any team that was at the Tournament.
