Fire Hydrant Flusing Work Resumes Every Night

• Scheduled Maintenance 10 pm to Midnight Daily Until Sept. 30

 – May 20, 2009 - Hydrant flushing work resumed in Nutley Sunday night and will continue all summer long, Deputy Fire Chief Mark Guiliano reports. He has asked neighbors to help spread the word.

Hydrants will be flushed between 10 p.m. and midnight, seven days a week through September 30.

"Four uniformed crews will go out while on duty and open hydrants until the water runs clear. This usually takes 15 to 20 minutes," Guiliano said.
"This procedure ensures a clean water supply to fire pumpers, thereby reducing maintenance costs and lengthening pump life," Guiliano explained.

Occasionally, sediment and build-up that's being flushed can discolor drinking water. Guliano said discolored water is not dangerous to health "but could stain laundry in your washing machines. Running water taps should clear pipes after a few minutes," he said.
