Jitney Service to Trains Is Catching On
• Tucci Reports 800 Riders Have Already Used the New Service
Mar 11, 2009 – Since its arrival in early January, the town's new Jitney service between Nutley and rush-hour NJ Transit trains at the nearby Dellawanna Station has attracted over 800 riders ov er a two month period, Commissioner Mauro Tucci said today.
Increasing park-and-ride options at Dellawanna was one of the "go green" concepts the township offered to assist in creating a cleaner, greener Nutley by cutting back on the numbers of vehicles driving on a daily basis.
Nutley applied for a grant in 2004 from New Jersey Transit for the jitney vehicle which was received in late November 2008. The grant funded the purchase cost the cost of its operation for three years during peak morning and evening commuter hours.
Trips will run on a regular schedule to Delawanna at a $1 per ride fee. Riders must have exact change and monthly coupon books will be available at a discounted rate in the near future.
