Red Cross Honoring Mayor Cocchiola Feb. 7

Jan 27, 2009 – Nutley Mayor Joanne Cocchiola is among 10 people being honored by the Montclair-Glen Ridge-Nutley Red Cross Chapter at its 12th annual Comradeship Awards Gala on Saturday, Feb. 7. The event is being hosted by Mary Alice Williams of CBS News.The Mayfairs Farms dinner will recognize significant community contributions to the quality of life through volunteer and humanitarian efforts.
Along with Mayor Cocchiola, honorees include Alan Goldman of Glen Ridge, Mrs. Robin Lobsitz of West Orange, Ms. Sharron Miller, the Rev. Wade & Mary Ann Renn, Mrs. Mary Beth Rosenthal, Deputy Mayor Roger Terry, and Mr. & Mrs. Bill & C.Y. Treene, all of Montclair.
The 6:30 p.m. event begins with cocktails and will be followed by dinner at 8. The black-tie-optional, red tie invited, red dress encouraged evening includes a raffle and live and silent auctions.
Mayor Cocchiola was the first woman in the history of Nutley to be elected to the Nutley Board of Commissioners. Re-elected to a second term in May 2004, she became the first woman to serve as mayor. She was re-elected and again appointed Mayor in 2008. She enjoys the distinction of being only the third Mayor in the history of the Township to serve two consecutive terms.
As Public Affairs Commissioner, Mayor Cocchiola has created numerous and pioneering health programs for the community including the CARE Committee, the Women's Health Initiative of Nutley, Nutley Thriving Survivors, and Community Health and mentoring Program (CHAMP).
Mayor Cocchiola is a contributing member of numerous local charitable, civic, and non-profit organizations including Nutley UNICO, AAUW, and the League of Women Voters. Among her many accomplishments, Garden State Woman Magazine selected Mayor Cocchiola as the 2007 'Woman of the Year' in Government.
