Performance Prompted by Book Club Discussion

‘Bollywood’ Dancers Entertain at Nutley Library

- A festive night featuring Indian dances performed by the Ayra Dance Academy troupe was featured Monday night(12/3/12) at the Nutley Public Library. The hour-long program featured very young and adult performers from the Ayra Dance Academy.

"The program was developed by our Monday night book club as its members celebrated 'Bollywood," the social and professional world of the Mumbai-based Hindi film industry," explained Nutley Librarian Maria LaBadia.

Fascinated after reading about 'Bollywood," Book Club members reached out to author Tejawini Ganti, associate professor of Anthropology at New York University. The result was an evening performance by both very young and professional Indian dancers that was followed by a discussion led by Ganti.

Her book, "Producing Bollywood," details how "Bollywood" has become a global film phenomenon ans well as a potent symbol of India as a rising economic powerhouse.

Dance director Sandy Amin of the Ayra Academy directed the dance performances for three groups: the first 4 to 7 years of age, the second 8 to 12 years, and the third, the talented adult Indian dancers.
