Volunteers Are Needed to Continue Event's Future

More Than 1,000 Visitors at ABC Science Fair

- Ayush Mishra, a Nutley student, not only built a miniature power generation station, he offered a seven-minute non-stop explanation of how winds are able to generate electricity. Misha ended his presentation at yesterday's Nutley Science Fair by hand-turning the model windmill on his exhibit, generating sufficient electricity to power a small string of lights.

Mishra is seven years ago and a student in the 2nd grade at Yantacaw School.

His exhibit was among more than 50 on display yesterday in the Nutley High School gymnasium as part of the annual science fair sponsored by the Nutley Academic Booster Club (ABC). More than 1,000 visitors turned out for the six-hour event.

Beside the student science exhibits, the fair featured live alligators that were carefully handled by Erik Zeidler from "New York Wild."

Five Candidates for Three Seats at November Election

Competitive Race Underway for BOE Positions

- It's been nearly seven months since 200 supporters of school board candidate Ryan Kline wished him well at a campaign kickoff reception hosted at the home of Mrs. Ruth Bedford. And now today, reminiscent of the television's "Twilight Zone," 200 supporters of Ryan Kline will be attending a kickoff reception at the home of Mrs. Ruth Bedford – this time Sunday, Sept. 30 from 5-8 p.m.

The reception last February was only one among five separate Board of Education election campaign events that came to an abrupt halt when school board elections in New Jersey were moved from their traditional spring date and now are included as part of the general Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012 fall election.

Altogether this fall, there are five candidates for three expiring seats in the school board race.

The board's vice president Tom Sposato and incumbent trustee Deborah Russo are seeking new three-year terms. Attorney Alan Thomas, who has attended every board meeting for more than three years, is a candidate as is Kevin Georgetti, a bank

Repairs Will Be Made in Time for September's Reopening

Driver Falls Asleep, Crashes Into Radcliffe School

- For the second time in the past two years, a car veered and crashed into the Radcliffe School building on Bloomfield Ave. causing significant damage but leaving the driver unharmed.

The accident occurred Saturday at 11 a.m. after 22-year-old Jeffrey Mazzeo fell asleep at the wheel. He was on the way home after working overnight at his job. No alcohol or drugs were involved, police said today.

Workers along with school and town officials were at the school building this morning and expect repairs will be made before the elementary school reopens in September.

Mayor Alphonse Petracco is also Nutley's director of public safety and is calling for additional barriers and safeguards to prevent similar accidents from happening again.

"I think we can all agree that if this happened only once we would was at was an unfortunate situation, but this is the second accident in three years that a car has run into the school building," Petracco said.

The previous accident involved a truck that rolled across Bloomfield Avenue from Bank Street into the front of the school and causing significant damage.

Annmarie Carollo Is New Yantacaw Principal

- A large group of teachers sat quietly in the audience during the July 17th Board of Education and it wasn't until the very last item of business before President Jim Kutcha announced that Annmarie Carollo had been selected as the new principal of the Yantacaw Elementary School. The audience burst into spontaneous applause.

The popular Yantacaw teacher had waited a long time for her deserved promotion, those applauding the choice said last night. The appointment is effective immediately.

Carollo succeeds David Sorenson who earlier this year was promoted to the position of vice principal at Nutley High School.
